The Tenpenny Villages Benefice of Alresford, Elmstead and Frating with Thorrington

The Friends of Elmstead Church

Honorary President – Mrs Beth Chatto OBE

The Friends was set up in 1987 and registered with the Charity Commission, with its stated aims "to assist in the preservation, repair, restoration and renewal of the fabric and furnishings of St. Anne & St. Laurence, Elmstead." It supports the PCC but is run quite separately with its own Chairman and Committee. The committee includes the Incumbent, a member of the PCC, a churchwarden and three members of the congregation as well as others who are interested in supporting the ethos of the organisation.

Various fund raising events have been held over the years, including:

The members of the congregation support all our events very enthusiastically. The Friends have invested in souvenirs, notelets, cookery books, tea-towels, Christmas cards and puddings, etc. These sell steadily throughout the year. There is an annual subscription of £12 and members receive a yearly newsletter. Since inception over £106,000 has been raised, enabling the Friends to make substantial contributions towards various projects including:

It is largely due to The Friends that the building is in such good condition for one of this age.

Our major event of 2015 took place in June when we held our Annual Art Exhibition; a profit of about £1650 was realised. Many people from near and far visited over the weekend and were impressed, not only by the standard of the artwork on display, but also by the relatively good condition of our beautiful old building. The money raised will go towards maintaining this.

The Friends would like to thank everyone who turned up to support the Cricket match in atrocious weather on Bank Holiday Monday and stayed and enjoyed a barbecue and a chance to chat. Our grateful thanks are expressed to Elmstead Cricket Club for all their support.
